The Sarpa samskara puja performed in Kukke subrahmanya Kshetra of Karnataka is believed to be very powerful and as per my knowledge, this is the only temple where this kind of puja is performed. I'll try to explain in detail about the process and background of this puja as I understood from the explanation of the pujari.
Generally it is believed that a person gets sarpa dosha in his life due to 3 main reasons:
1) Anyone of our family members killed a snake.(As per sastras, if snake, monkey and cat are killed or died, one has to perform Dahana samskaras to relive the soul)
2) A snake might have died in the land or plot where we are living or having cultivation, which didn't have funeral rites.
3) A snake might have died under the wheels of our vehicle unknowingly.
The result of the sarpa dosha in a person's life is seen in many ways like delayed marriage, delayed issue, skin diseases, financial growth obstructed and some other diseases. So this puja is meant for all such problems which is addressed to calm down the effect of Rahu, Ketu and Kuja Grahas at a time.
This puja can be performed only by those who are performing pitru karma because here as a part of the puja one has to do dahana samskara and pinda pradanam to idol of the snake just in a similar way performed for human beings. If you are a brahmin and did pitru karma, you can perform this puja on your own as per the instructions given in the mike by the main pujari. If you are a non-brahmin, a priest is appointed to perform the puja on your behalf and you have to book for this in advance by sending the DD and the appointment is fixed depending on the dates available.
On the destined day of the puja, one has to wake up early in the morning (preferably 5 AM) and take a dip in the Kumara Dhara river (located in the entrance of the Kukke) and make yourself ready to stand in the queue for the ticket by 7 AM. There will be given a seat no on the ticket. Go to the Adi Subrahmanya temple and be present there at your seat no. by 9AM on the same day. Everyone will be given a Deeksha vastra which must be preserved and worn during the 2 day puja session.
As far as i understood, the puja process follows like this.
Two idols of snakes are made out of flour, one male and the other female.(The female can be made out with two or three eggs on its side). With the mantra chanting the soul of the unrelieved snake is transferred to the male idol (Aavahana) and with systematic puja, that idol is put into fire so as to perform the Dahana samskara. The female snake idol, again with proper mantra chanting, is left in the presence of the male snake Vasuki, referring that we wish to see our family too grow in the same manner as the snake family grows by bringing together the male and female. After this, all the persons of the family are asked to take dip in the pool there as it is common when we do such rituals to humans.
This finishes the first session of the puja and in the afternoon, lunch is provided in the same Adisubrahmanya temple complex. One is instructed not to go inside the temple for darshan till the puja is totally finished. The dinner too is provided by the temple itself and it is must that one should not eat outside food for these 2 days. Dinner is provided a bit early in the night.
The day 2 puja consists of pinda pradana and tarpana for 64 times which is meant to relieve the soul completely and send it to pious lokas. Don't forget to bring the deeksha vastra given to you the previous day. Be there on time as prescribed, as the late comers may have to wait for one more day to finish the puja. The puja consists of Brahmachari puja as well as Gopuja (worshiping a cow). The 2nd day breakfast is also provided by the temple authorities. By the afternoon of the 2nd day, you are done with the total procedure of the puja which ends with Naga pratishta in the main temple of Subrahmanya. Even Sankalpam(with one's Gotra and nama) is done in the main temple before Naga pratishta. The nagapratishta prasadam is distributed from 12 in the afternoon. This finishes the puja.
Generally it is believed that it is better to directly go home after this puja (without visiting any other place) and it is preferable not to take cooked food out side for these 2 days. Fruits, juices, coffee, tea, milk like things are fine.
Points to be noted:
Price of the ticket Rs 2500/-
Dont eat outside food for those 2 days
Non-brahmins should book for the puja in advance.
Person performnig pitrukarma is only eligible to perform the puja.
Don't go for darshanin the main temple till the puja is finished.
Don't forget to bring the Deeksha vastra on the 2nd day too.
Be on time for the 2nd day puja.
Directly go home after finishing the puja.

ReplyDeletewhere shall i book for sarpa samskara puja in kukke?
do i have to book in advance? if yes where to book this puja?
you can book online @
Deletehttps://www.kukke.org/en/online_seva_booking-eseva.aspx
Thanks for the valuable info satish. But last time, when I tried to book for the sarpa samskara pooja, it was showing 3000/- and now when I tried to book for the same, it is showing 2500/-. So, which is the exact price I have pay for the pooja. Please, let me know the exact amount I have to pay for.And finally, thank you for giving the website information to book for the pooja through online.
DeleteThanks for the info. But how to send the DD to them ?

Sir can we perform sarpasamkara day1 Pooja in morning and ashlesha Bali pooja in the evening means both. Pooja on same day
DeleteIf you are a brahmin, then no need to boook it in advance. otherwise, just give a call to devasthanam and ask the procedure to book it in advance. you can send the DD to the address mentioned by them. this is the link where the contact details are found

ReplyDeleteI am a brahmin. Since my father is no more I have been doing shradham for last 19 yrs. So I think I can do it ono my own... right.
ReplyDeleteI enquired at the Helpdesk number given in the website. But they told me to send DD and then they will give a date.
Is it advisable to go there directly and do it very next day? Is that okay or is it looked down upon?
does anyone of you have contact number of the priest who does ashlesha nagabali and sarpa sanskara? i wud like to talk to him.please send it to shakti.axapta@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWhen we wentt for performing the puja, Brahmins were informed that they can directly come there and proceed for the puja the next day. They might have missed the information they you are a Brahmin. Confirm it again since there can be some change in rules over there.
ReplyDeleteThe statement "...it is better to directly go home after this puja (without visiting any other place)..." is wrong. I just enquired with the main archaka and he said since its "unlike pitru kaarya" and is a pooja vidhaana, you can visit any other nearby temple or kshethras such as Dharmastala, Udupi, Southadaka etc.
ReplyDeleteThis is very useful I think people travel hundreds of kilometres to visit and do poojas it makes no sense to say should directly go home after this .. thanks
DeleteIf it is visiting temples on the way back home, it might be ok. But they generally say so since many people are not focused only on temples. The reason behind it my be to sustain the sanctity of the puja performed.
ReplyDeletenow u can book online also.for contact information go to official website ok Kukke Subramanya Temple https://www.kukke.org/
ReplyDeleteI dont see any online link for booking.. kindly advice.

I am having one doubt.s dis puja can perform by ladies also .my marriage is getting delayed i dont know why?
ReplyDeleteCan you please suggest me any one please help me out ..
My dob :26/08/1987
I don't think single ladies can perform this puja, as it consists of all the funereal rites like things. Better to confirm about that with the temple authorities before you fix your program.
DeleteThank you very much for sharing this info... very useful :-)
ReplyDeleteCan any a Non Brahmin person go without booking for the puja ??
ReplyDeleteNo, nonbrahmins can't go directly without advance booking as the slots may all be filled in prior only
ReplyDeleteon 2nd day, exactly at what time pooja will end?
ReplyDeleteif only sarpasamskara it ends by 8.30am on second day and naga pratista starts at 12.15pm and ends at 12.40pm...
ReplyDeletesingle ladies with family can attend this or perform this pooja , many of them whose marriage is getting delayed will surely perform this sarpasamskara pooja by prior booking...
ReplyDeleteI have seen snake immediately after performing sarpa samskara pooja ending naga prathishta!! Why is that happened. Is it wrong? Is there any prayaschitha that I shall perform

DeleteAs per my belief, there's nothing wrong. instead, i see it as a blessing from the lord. he gave you darshan satisfied with your seva. so be happy and keep faith in the all-pervading almighty. Remember, God will never frighten you, if you are a true devotee, he will guide you in the right way.
DeleteDear Lalitha,
ReplyDeleteMy marriage was getting delaying. One of my friend suggested to perform pooja here. Plz suggest type of pooja to perform?
Dear Durga rao garu, the sarpa samskara puja which we performed is said to free us from the ill-effects which obstruct the marriage, progeny and financial progress. so, better opt for that seva or proceed as per your pandit/astrologer's suggestion.
DeleteLast year a snake was killed by a labor/worker in one of my stores at night.
ReplyDeleteAgain, a few days back another snake was killed on my land where construction is going on for my farm house - do i need to go there myself and get this pooja done or can i get it done in my ( or my father's ) name by a priest there or can i send any of my representative to go and do it there in my ( or my father's ) name ? Plz help.
though it was the worker who killed the snake,it was your land and in future you are going to stay there. If possible, try to do dahanam of the killed snake, as it is very common to find snakes in the construction fields. if we perfom puja personally, it would be more effective, i believe. Just spending money on the puja is not the only concern. when you understand and perform the proceedings, the satisfaction will be the utmost. on a lighter note, we have to take medicine if we have a problem, not others on our behalf, right?
DeleteThank u Lalitha for sharing ur experiance and it is valueble. But i am having one doubt. Will they provide any accomodation to the person who is performing sarpa samskara puja or we need to book any room for staying.
ReplyDeleteOr else if they provide accomodation for staying how many members can stay along with the person who is performing puja

Hi Lalitha, My sister is having Kaal Sarpa Dosha in her kundalli, due to which she is facing so many problems like delayed marriage, and getting diseased and all. I am from North India and little new to Karnataka, but heard a lot about Kukke Subramaniya Temple. Could you please tell me, if i can go to temple and get Sarp Samskara pooja done on my sister's behalf or her presence is required over there.
ReplyDeleteCould you Please help me clearing the doubt.
Thanks in advance!!
hi Ankita sorry for my delayed reply. but, yes, the sarpa samskara puja will definitely have its effect. no regrets though you know little bout Karnataka. You can personally call me to get the full details and doubts cleared. give me your mail id so that i can send you my no.
DeleteHi All,
ReplyDeleteActually if i book 1 ticket for sarpa samskara at KUKKE, can me and my husband can do pooja or should i take seperate tickets for both of us.
Both of us are having kala sarpa dosham.
1 ticket for a couple is enough. seperate tickets are not needed.
DeleteIs it Mandatory to present both dad and mom in the pooja
DeleteSwamiye saranam ayappa....swami saranam lalithasree Garu...I am in ayappa deeksha and I have booked for sarpa samskara pooja next week..can I perform sarpa samskara pooja in my ayappa deeksha period...kindly guide me
ReplyDeleteIt would be better if you confirm about this directly from temple authorities. For your reference, I attach a photo to the post above containing the phone numbers and other information about the puja.
DeleteI don't know, whether I have any Kala sarpa dosha, but I had one abortion and one delivery where a baby girl was born , but could not survive. We r brahmins, and my husband has done pitru karma. Can we do sarpa sanskara pooja. Please reply
ReplyDeleteyes, your husband can perform the puja, which will eliminate the dosha, if at all some exists.
Deletehi

The 2nd Day procedure will end up definitely before 12 noon.
ReplyDeleteIn Online Booking Link, they are asking for the Date of Pooja , Does it stands for First day of Pooja or Main second day of Pooja , Help needed on this.
ReplyDeleteas per my knowledge,it should be the first day of the puja, since the process starts on this day itself.

hi Manjunath
Deletei knew nothing about these agents granting the tickets for a high price. better not to opt for it as it may give you trouble if its not genuine. as it is a long week end it may require prior booking well in advance. Even the temple authorities warn not to follow others' guide lines.
Hello m'am...nice to read all d information about sarpa samskara...need to know one information...a person doing sarpa samskara need his family members like parents while doing pooja..do let me know
ReplyDeleteIf you yourself are performing the puja, no need for others to be present cumpulsorily. But if you are not eligible to do it yourself, means if you haven't done pitru karma earlier, then your parents should do the puja.
DeleteHi Lalitha
ReplyDeleteVery informative post. One doubt, I have booked for sarpasamskara pooja last month, coming weekend we need to go to temple but my mom got her monthly date, we are doubtful whether we are supposed to go and do pooja or postpone. Please help.
Thanks in advance
I think it's better to call the temple authorities and ask them about how to postpone the puja.
DeleteReally good info....thanks a lot. Can I go alone or should I take my family for pooja.
ReplyDeleteAnything is ok
DeleteIf you are married, you should take your wife to have the benefits come to entire family. Children.. especially small ones I will avoid as it is difficult to make them sit quietly for 2=3 hrs.
DeleteNamaskar, is any dress code for pooja, i booked for sarpasanskar pooja, i also want to do ashlesha pooja on22 may 2016, can i do both pooja in same day pl help
ReplyDeleteThe dress code is white dhoti and angavastram (which means top half of ur body.. you shouldn't be wearing anything. If you are married, then your wife should accompany you and wear traditional saree. Children are optional and I didnt take my kids along as they will become restless.
ReplyDeleteThe Sarpa Samskara is a 2 day activity and Ashlesha Bali is done on 2nd day in the afternoon.
There is no way you can do everything in 1 day. So plan for 2 days.
I did all of this in Jan 2016... but i can tell you with experience they do everything very very well. It is superbly organized.
Very informative thanks for the information, I have booked for the pooja this week but my wife has periods during this week can I perform the pooja with out her for now and repeat the pooja some other time with my wife. Please suggest
ReplyDeleteHonestly.. I don't know. Ideally, you should do it with your wife. But I am not an expert... i suggest you call up the temple office and ask them.

ReplyDeleteNamaskar my sister and I both married wish to have the sarapa dosha puja performed for family members and ourselves. As married women unaccompanied by husband's can we have pujari perform puja. My sister had killed a snake many years back in her propert and has had a lot of disruptions in her family life including financial problems and lack of success in her sons lives. I have not been in any situation where a snake has been killed but do not know if such a thing might have happened in my parents home. We are a large family but no one has been successful in work or business and also many have difficult marriages and some divorces. Can we as sisters have sarpdosha puja performed for all family members by pujari. I live outside karnataka and after puja wish to spend a few days with brother in Bangalore instead of returning to my home directly after puja - will this be a problem. I look forward to your reply. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteAfter the 2 day pooja you should go directly home (and use the prasad which is given). You should not go any other place or else the fruits of this pooja doesnt accrue to you and family.

DeleteDear Madam- My son was born on Aslesha Nakshtra. Please let us know what pooja can be performed at Kukke. If Ashlesha bali needs to be performed- do we need to tell only my son's namename and Nakshatra or we can have all our names(me and my wife and my mother)
ReplyDeleteDear Lalithasree== I'm told to perform Sarpasamskara, Aslesha Bali and Naga Prathista. I'm thinking to go in August to Kukke. I have couple of questions. Please help me with the answers.
ReplyDelete1. I'm not brahmin, so should I book a priest once I visit there or will the temple arrange them for our booking of sarpasamskara?
2. Should I take seperate seva ticket for Sarpasamskara, Aslesha Bali and Naga Prathista?
Please help.
you can book the puja in advance which will automatically allot you a priest. Out of the 3, 2 sevas will be performed under Sarpa samskara. Aslesha bali should be performed seperately if are particularly asked for that.
DeleteThank you very much for your response. I see that Aslesha bali seva is performed in only two shifts i.e., 7-00A.M.& 9.15 A.M, so should I have to be in the temple for the third day, as first day we should not enter to the temple once sarpasamskara seva is started and second day, other seva would finish by around 12PM. Please advise.
DeleteI supose the same. you may have to stay for the 3rd day too for the Aslesha bali as the timing of finish on the 2nd day depends on the crowd of that particular day in the temple. the extra day will make sure you finish all he sevas satisfactorily and wholeheartedly.
DeleteHi, I was informed that I had the sarpa dosha and a swamy asked to perform this pooja at this temple.I came accross that only people with pitru karma can do this Pooja. My father is there. Is this not the right pooja then?
ReplyDeleteIn that case your father has to perform the puja for you, if his father (your grandfather) is not alive. Means he should be performing pitru karma. for instnce, my father-in-law performed the puja on behalf of my husband.
ReplyDeleteOur family has performed sarpa samskara twice already at kukke. Once some 8yrs ago privately and second time by booking at the temple 2 yrs ago. We are planning to perform it this year again. While we have seen many families doing it again and again, there are others who say it must not be done frequently. Can you pls clarify this?
ReplyDeleteI have no idea about how many times the puja can be performed. better to take an advice from your family priest.
ReplyDeleteAm suffring from kaalasarpa dosha and kuja my wife also...can i go for kukkke temple or srikalasti temple. Which is better plz let me know am con fusing and my sister also marriage delay....
ReplyDeleteAnjaneyulu if any infm...ganand.121@gmail.com plz
Am alredy done rahu ketu pooja at sri kaalasti temple once marrige before...plz let me know...
ReplyDeleteconsult the priest of your family or a pandit and proceed as per his advice since both places are equally important and powerful.
DeleteMy mother's side ancestors killed snake.... I have two abortions and a son was born who survived only 6 months. We are brahmins.... and husband doesn't have parents... can we perform sarpa sanskara pooja.. and whether Ashley Bali also needs to be performed
ReplyDeleteyou can definitely perform Sarpa samskara pooja and your husband can himself do the pooja a you don't have in-laws.
DeleteI have booked tickets to go to Kukke on Oct 4th. I am planning to do the Sarpasamskara pooja on Oct 06 and 7. I will be there on Oct 5th. Is it okay if i go there and book the ticket. Because online it is not available. I am a brahmin. Kindly suggest.
ReplyDeletebrahmins need not book it in advance. they can go and get the tickets directly one day before the puja day. only thing is you are eligible only if you are already performing pitru karma, since the process involves doing the last rites to the snake idols.
DeleteHii! this sarpasamskara pooja booking only online?
ReplyDeletethere is no availabile tickets on temple to direct temple office?
if you are a brahmin, you need not book in advance. otherwise you have to book online in advance.
DeleteThe contact number of the temple office use only kannada and english or other languges? pls tell me mam.
ReplyDeleteand one more doubt is single lady perform this pooja with family like father and mother? or only mother is enough?
i couldnt understand your doubt sir. if single lady wants to perform, her parents can do that. please be clear.

DeleteHi Lalitha mam,
ReplyDeleteI'm married for the past 6 years and childless. Is it a must to perform sarpa samskara pooja on Monday and Tuesday or Tuesday and wednesday. My spouse too says Monday and Tuesdays are two important and auspicious days to perform Sarpa Samskara pooja. I too heard from people that these two days are auspicious days for perform pooja particularly. What I say is that, performing pooja with devotion is more important than doing performing on these two particular days.Or, can I perform on any given day on the availability in that particular month. In fact, I want to do so in next month November 12th and 13th, 2016. Kindly advice me on this regard. My email id is: satishchandra.achar@gmail.com.Mble:7676179376. If you don't mind, can I get your email id mam.
hello sir/madam
Deletethere is no particular rule that you should perform the puja on specific days, but the mind set is what matters. i agree with you in the point that performing puja with devotion and understanding the concept is very important. but if your spouse is very particular of the days, prefer those days to make her happy and do puja with devotion in you way to balance both conditions. i will mail you soon
Hello madam,

it doesn't matter about your mother's parents. as your father is eligible to perform the puja, anyone can accompany him
ReplyDeletemadam me and my husband performed nagaprathishta on dec 11 2016 till how many days we should not eat non veg..after how many days we can plan for baby

DeleteI am outside India. Can i use any online Puja Company to do my Puja on behalf of me present there personally. I really cannot be present for the puja.
I would like to know whether it is really effective.
This is for my Kaal Sarpa dosha.
Please advice
Thank you
Rajkumar
it may be suggestible that your parents do puja on your behalf. you need not be present in that case. the effectiveness of the puja depends on the degree of your faith in that, i believe. thank you
DeleteMs. Lalitha, Even my parents are with me.Can i use any online Puja Company to do my Puja on behalf of me without any body present there personally. I really cannot be present for the puja.
ReplyDeleteI have believe. Please advice. Thank you
in that case, better to contact the temple officials what to do.
DeleteHi. I want to know about the food which they tell we should not eat for 12 days.. like onion and garlic. Can I know why we should not eat dishes with those two? And should the entire family members not intake alcohol in this 12 days? Please reply
ReplyDeletethe food like onion and garlic come under the category of non-satvik aahar, which is generally avoided during puja times in many devotional families. the intention is to keep the mind peacefully on the almighty in a calm state at least for some days after going through a sacred process like this puja. im totally unaware of the rules regarding alcohol. sorry

Can sarpa samskara be performed when my wife is having periods. Both me and my wife will be part of the pooja !!
ReplyDeleteif you are personally attending the pooja with your wife, then, the answer is "no". its a sin even if you enter temples with periods, that's my opinion.

ReplyDeleteHi we performed aslesha Bali Pooja for Parenthood (6years of marrige life without children) and had attended prayer at 12.30 pm in front of lord Subramanya in the last week. After performing prayer, the priest gave me one Prasadam and asked us to take for 12 days continuously for fulfilling our admire.

ReplyDeleteI booked sarpa dosh pooja on 24Jan2019.
ReplyDeleteIn receiving message they have mentioned that I have to collect the original receipt for the same is one day before 7Pm.
I am staying in Bangalore. From Bangalore to kukke subramanyam buses are at night time and reach there by earalt morning only.
Will they give original receipt on pooja date itself as pooja timings are from 8am?
Kindly suggest me or guide me. It's my humble request.
You have to report them before day means 23 Jan 2019 to get original ticket from them in which your seat no will be mentioned...from bangBangato KUKKESUBRAMANYA local buses ksrtc busses available from morning 8...best advice is to report before day to avoid confusion s and dissatisfaction..
DeleteS Pooja will get start at 8.30 am near adi subramanyA temple.in yagasala...and ends at 11 am...only once in a day Pooja will be done for all online booking s....so reach before day to avoid hurryness and confusion

Please guide me whether we can perform sarpasamkara pooja and if so who is eligible to do the sarpasamskara pooja. Thanks in advance.

Will my sankalpam will not be fulfilled. I am so much worried now . With so much planning did this Pooja with family .now am scared if Pooja dont go unfulfilled. 😥😥😪😑😐
ReplyDelete@ Lalitha, you mentioned teh following in your blog: oints to be noted:
ReplyDeletePrice of the ticket Rs 2500/-
Dont eat outside food for those 2 days
Non-brahmins should book for the puja in advance.
Person performnig pitrukarma is only eligible to perform the puja.
Don't go for darshanin the main temple till the puja is finished.
Don't forget to bring the Deeksha vastra on the 2nd day too.
Be on time for the 2nd day puja.
Directly go home after finishing the puja. For this last point- directly go home, is there a specific reason for this?

ReplyDeleterecently I underwent this sarpasamskara puja. I would like to add, fees is 3200. but during the pooja, priest asked for dakshina and on both days.. on 2nd day of puja, priest asked for 501 rs as dakashina. we gave 100rs which he refused and asked for 500rs . we were sitting right below the CCTV camera.. But all the priest follows same. hide dakshina in their vastaram. I would like to say . Please remove the board saying all cost , dakshina is inclusive in fees. wherein on every step, priest upfront ask for money in form of dakshina
